Naked Man Rips Off Penis, Almost Dies, Blames Hallucinogenic Mushrooms
Something weird is in the mushrooms in Michigan’s Ypsilanti Township: Police say a man ripped off part of his own penis, almost killing himself through blood loss, after taking hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Romance the Positive
You see, in order to create a paradigm shift, you’ve got to get angry. You’ve got to be angry at what you don’t want, because it takes this emotion to move you out of the rut.

The National to Release New Album in May
The National have announced that their next record will be out in May via 4AD. This is the followup to 2010's excellent High Violet. Their summer tour in support the album will include dates with Dirty Projectors and a homecoming gig at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, plus dates in North America and Europe. They're also playing a venue called the National in Richmond, Virginia, which is pretty funny.
ANAMORPHIC SCULPTURES
London-based artist Jonty Hurwitz creates ‘Anamorphic Sculptures’ which only reveal themselves once facing a reflective cylinder. Hurwitz took an engineering degree in Johannesburg where he discovered the fine line between art and science. He has lived in England for many years, working in the online industry though he quietly levitated into the world of art inspired by a need to make ‘something real’. Hurwitz discovered that he could use science as an artistic paintbrush. Each of his sculptures is a study on the physics of how we perceive space and is the stroke of over 1 billion calculations and algorithms.

The scientists, from the Department of Psychology at York and the Bradford School of Optometry & Vision Science established how the two areas worked by subjecting them to magnetic fields for a short period which disrupted their normal brain activity. The research which is reported in Nature Neuroscience represents an important step forward in understanding how the brain processes visual information.

Binge drinking memories away
Human studies suggest that binge-pattern drinking is more closely associated with brain damage. One study, for example, reported that binge drinking at least once per month in adulthood significantly increases the risk of developing dementia later in life. Animal models help provide the critical information that binge drinking, which produces high blood alcohol levels, directly causes damage.

The Knife: Shaking the Habitual
In the almost seven years since the release of the Knife's last album, Silent Shout, Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer's nightmarish electronic pop has seemed to spawn its own genre of ghostly club music. The Swedish brother/sister duo's influence can be heard in the likes of Purity Ring, Niki & the Dove, Kate Boy, Chvrches, and more. But while their sound is everywhere, the pair themselves have remained relatively mysterious and cloistered. - Album out this Spring.

99 balls of beer on the wall
Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout is an assertive foreign-style stout, slightly viscous, with a deep brown color. It has equally deep flavors of chocolate syrup, Kahlua, and espresso, along with a palpable level of alcohol and a savory umami-like note.It finishes dry and roasted with a fast-fading hop bite. The beer is 7% ABV and has 3 BPBs. That’s balls per barrel.

A Post-Quantum World
We are all busy thinking that a new theory will come by studying quantum physics and gravity and that we need to probe smaller and smaller regions of space and time to get there. But, maybe in order to explain the existence of life we need to come up with another theory of physics – something going well beyond quantum physics.

The Brain Supremacy
Natural sciences study matter; life sciences study things that matter. Hence the sense of ‘unnatural’, perhaps? — unease about meddling with human nature runs deep. The dichotomy between life and physical sciences reflects a basic perceptual distinction between living and non-living, animate and insensate stuff. As young children, we learn these categories so quickly that thinkers including Dan Dennett (in his book Freedom Evolves) suggest we’re primed to do so by evolution.

As grateful as we are for Cat Power's music, we'd rather she be healthy and happy than struggling, and we're not sure there's necessarily a contradiction between leading a satisfied life and making great art. But most of all, here's hoping Marshall gets better soon so she can get on doing what she loves.

It clearly shows the three pyramids in Giza, Egypt, with three planets above them. There are various versions of this picture I’ve seen; most are like this with almost no explanation. Human Slavery...
Around the world human traffickers trick many people into slavery by false promises of good jobs or good education, only to find themselves forced to work without pay, under the threat of violence. Trapped by phony debt, these slaves are hunted by local police and private security guards if they try to escape. Sometimes slaves don't even understand that they're enslaved, despite people working 16 or 17 hours a day with no pay. They're simply used to it as something they've been doing their whole lives. Their bodies grow weak and vulnerable to disease, but they have nothing to compare their experience to.

Jesus: to marry or not to marry.
The kind of belief we associate with faith doesn’t rise or fall on archeological digs or, as in The Da Vinci Code’s case, decrypted symbology. At their core, religions are stories, dramas so powerfully meaningful that they become for billions of people their cultural means of communing with God.... So just as I don’t get that worked up when a “find” purports to debunk my faith, I don’t get too excited when one appears to validate my faith. Or at least my convictions about the Catholic clergy, as King’s Jesus-was-married codex would seem to do. At a time when the Vatican, panicked by growing Catholic support for female ordination, is senselessly hounding U.S. nuns for their “radical feminism,” the latest piece of papyrus does serve as a useful reminder of how wrong Rome is in this matter. But most of us knew that long before King deciphered it.

Alt+J
Alt-J, who met at Leeds University and have, since graduating, been living and recording in a basement in Cambridge, are named after the Mac keyboard command for the "delta" sign, which in itself intrigued us when we first heard about the four-piece. But not enough to warrant the full 600-word New Band of the Day treatment. No, what swung it for us was their debut album, An Awesome Wave, which has been rapturously received.

A 63-year-old woman became 'pregnant' with 12 baby squid after eating calamari, according to a claim in a bio-tech report. The real-life 'octo-mum', from South Korea, was eating a portion of cooked whole squid when she felt a sharp pain in her mouth..... When examined, the doctors found 'baby cephalopods' attached to her mouth. These are small pods, covered in a cement-like material to make them stick.... She complained of a pricking and foreign-body sensation in the oral cavity. (pricking sensation in her oral cavity? I'm not sure that was necessary.)

Samsung Tablet Blocked
Apple is on a patent tear winning an injunction that bans sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in the United States. Adding to its patent victories the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Apple 27 new patents, including a patent for scrolling, rotating, and scaling documents on touch screen devices. Late Tuesday a federal court in California granted Apple a preliminary injunction finding the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be substantially similar "in the eyes of the ordinary observer" to an Apple patent (D504,889) and "virtually indistinguishable" from Apple's iPad and iPad 2.

I knew I hated LEDs.
Abraham Haim of the University of Haifa in Israel considers white LEDs a form of "light pollution." "What is called 'friendly' environmental illumination is unfriendly," said Haim, who is a chronobiologist, a scientist who studies biological rhythms and cycles in animals. He has conducted studies showing that blue light can disrupt circadian-related hormones in nocturnal animals such as voles, moles and rats...."This has been a very exciting discovery in the whole world of chronobiology and vision research," said Jay Neitz, a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Washington in Seattle. "We always thought rods and cones were responsible for circadian rhythms and then we find there’s a particular cell that [sends signals] to the superchiasmatic nucleus, the brain's central clock important for daily biological rhythms."

Whoever edited this video... man.
Remixing classic records is not so simple. Many music lovers take the approach, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But DMV producer/emcee Oddisee's remix of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" is undeniably dope. Not only does he flip the beat, giving it hard, hip-hop drums and bass, but he twists the feel of the song, bringing out the minor sounds from the original vocals with matching piano stabs. And the video blends a variety of live performance footage of the song together, matching perfectly with the track.

The National Science Foundation has just revealed the existence of not one but two, pristine, Hubble-class space telescopes still in their original wrappings in a warehouse in Rochester, N.Y. The pair was originally built for the National Reconnaissance Office (which is scary as shit), the agency in charge of spy satellites, to look down at Earth rather than up into space. But the NRO has moved on to bigger and better instruments, and decided to hand the telescopes over. Enthusiastic crowds jostled to get a better view of the quantum levitation display at Innovation Square on Saturday, a day-long celebration of science held at MetroTech Plaza in Brooklyn as part of the World Science Festival. Hubble Movies Provide Unprecedented View of Supersonic Jets from Young Stars..... August 31, 2011: A team of scientists has collected enough high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope images over a 14-year period to stitch together time-lapse movies of powerful jets ejected from three young stars. The jets, a byproduct of gas accretion around newly forming stars, shoot off at supersonic speeds in opposite directions through space. These phenomena are providing clues about the final stages of a star’s birth, offering a peek at how our Sun came into existence 4.5 billion years ago. Hubble’s unprecedented sharpness allows astronomers to see changes in the jets over just a few years’ time. Most astronomical processes change over timescales that are much longer than a human lifetime.

Write your name in the sky.
Created by UK astronomer Steven Bamford, My Galaxies uses actual images of galaxies acquired through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Galaxy Zoo projects to create your message, which you can then share on Facebook, Twitter or email. You can even download a high-res version of the resulting PNG image (although I did find that I had to open the file in Photoshop and add a layer filled with black behind the galaxified letters, in order to clear out some background noise. Perhaps this can be fixed in the future.)

On Sunday afternoon (May 20), the path of an annular solar eclipse will cross parts of eight western states. SPACE.com estimates that an estimated 6.6 million Americans live within the path of annularity....The most intriguing possibility is to see the sun mimic a ring of fire as it is about to set, which makes an already striking sky event all the more dramatic. New Yorkers Are Having Trouble with the Communal Restaurant Table
And so is Laura Katherine.....people do not like sitting with strangers at those long communal tables that have been springing up at trendy and expensive restaurants. And it seems communal tables are here to stay, what with high rents and small spaces and wanting to pack folks in to make as much money as possible; it's just another part of living in a big city, “like riding the subway or standing in the checkout line at Fairway.” Well, it is true, you can end up next to people you'd rather not in all of those situations, too. Though you're not chewing your meal cheek-by-jowl next to them, ideally.

His flow on his 1997 single “Hail Mary” was still raw and charismatic; he shared an easy rapport with Snoop Dogg on “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”; and his inked obliques looked as chiseled as ever.

They say that lightning never strikes twice, but this amazing photo proves otherwise. An incredible eight bolts struck the Bay Bridge in San Francisco last night which was captured in this incredible shot by photographer Phil McGrew, who took the photo through the rain-soaked window of his apartment.

It's been said that we're too polite.
Etiquette also remains more intact in the South, and especially in the Deep South, than in most other parts of the country. If so, polls there could encounter similar problems...If the causal mechanism is social desirability bias, however, it might be that the polls exaggerate the standing of candidates who are seen as more broadly acceptable and as less offensive, or who have the support of the establishment. In this election, that might be Mr. Romney, who won the endorsement of Gov. Phil Bryant of Mississippi.

Kill for Love
On Kill for Love, the Chromatics‘ fourth full-length in over a decade of making music, the Portland troupe carves out a 90-minute jaunt that seemingly soundtracks the seedy underbelly of a Western metropolis. Equal parts desolate, morose, post-apocalyptic, enigmatic, glowing, and radiant, the vintage cinematic sounds that emanate over its 17 tracks recall the early work of filmmaker/composer John Carpenter.

Christianity’s Via Dolorosa
There is an obvious reticence by international bodies even to acknowledge the problem. But according to the Pew Forum, at least 10% of the world’s Christians – 200 million people in 133 countries – live in societies as a minority group. Unless action is taken to address the issue, hundreds of communities that simply wish to practice their religion peacefully will face profound psychological and demographic consequences, fleeing into exile to preserve their faith.

Across the board, we have spent $33 billion on public service announcements to get kids not to smoke pot since 1969 and the rate of 12th graders who use marijuana is exactly the same as it was before we spent those billions

No, as a matter of fact, you can't take my clothes off.
It might seem that in the United States, being pulled over for driving without a seat belt should not end with the government ordering you to take off your clothes and “lift your genitals.” But there is no guarantee that this is the case — not since the Supreme Court ruled this week that the Constitution does not prohibit the government from strip-searching people charged with even minor offenses.

A post Katrina coverup? I don't believe it.
Five former police officers were sentenced to lengthy prison terms in federal court on Wednesday for the shootings of six unarmed civilians, two of whom died, in the days after Hurricane Katrina, and for orchestrating a wide-ranging cover-up afterward.

I never want to go into Outer Space.
But I never ever ever want to go to the sun... On Sept. 25, the spacecraft recorded a mammoth tornado on the sun — a storm five times the width of Earth, reaching high into the solar atmosphere, with winds clocked at a blazing 300,000 km/h (186,000 m.p.h.). "Blazing," in this case, is not a figurative term: the gases entrained in the tornado reached an estimated 2,000,000°C — that's 3,600,000°F, although at temperatures like that, the scale hardly matters. The storm lasted at least three hours and traveled about 200,000 km (125,000 miles) — and there's a movie, the first ever filmed of such a storm, to prove it.

Hm.
Something about this reminds me of The Game.
It’s nearly impossible to describe the Games of Nonchalance without giving it all away. And that, in itself, says something about the kind of experience it offers: a chance to see the city as a pervasive playground.

Even I'm not that literal.
It seems that scientists find more and more evidence to prove the existence of parallel worlds. Physicists at Stanford University managed to calculate the hypothetical number of universes that were formed as a result of the Big Bang. According to them, the Big Bang created 10 universes. It is quite possible, though, that they may exist inside one another, including our planet. Therefore, there is probably another Earth hidden inside planet Earth.

"Best" might be stretching it.... 2nd best? Sure.

When Air announced the details for their forthcoming Le Voyage Dans La Lune a little while ago, one of the more interesting wrinkles was that one song would feature vocals from Beach House’s Victoria Legrand. That track has now surfaced; hit the jump to stream “Seven Stars.”

A woman described as "heavyset" and naked except for her shoes was pulled off the J-Church line on Tuesday morning, and while cops and medical personnel were evaluating her near the intersection of 24th and Church in Noe Valley, she threw off a blanket that had been wrapped around her, walked up on the hood of one man's car, and stomped on his windshield.

Common cat parasite could actually be causing schizophrenia and suicide
But now, evidence is piling up that T. gondii may have something to do with the rise in schizophrenia, may be a major factor in hundreds of thousands of traffic fatalities, and could be driving people to suicide. There's new evidence that the parasite jacks up the dopamine receptors in your brain, which govern pleasure and fear responses, which could cause greater changes in behavior than we ever realized. All of which leads to the question: Just how much is this parasite controlling people's minds?

Warped Galaxy
This is the principle behind what’s called gravitational lensing. A beam of light passing by an object — a big galaxy, say, or a cluster of galaxies — bends one way. A beam headed in a slightly different direction bends a slightly different way. This can really mess with what we see… which I can prove! Check this out: a Hubble image of the galaxy RCSGA 032727-13260.

Map me.
“Maps are inventions, and like other inventions that have complicated life and made civilization, they have grown and developed. They started, like the motor-car, crude, comic and almost useless. They have developed in two or three thousand years as the motor-car has developed in twenty. Both are now things of beauty, of perfection almost, and of abiding utility.”

I remember stars...
It turns out that more than just astronomers and lay stargazers are hurt by the loss of dark skies, as Cheney discovered on that journey of his. So are birds, which can get confused as they try to migrate (4,000 birds a year crash into buildings in Chicago, for example, drawn to the city's lights at night). So are sea turtles, who rely on the relative brightness of the beach at night to find their way ashore and lay their eggs, and now find it harder to distinguish sea from sand from sky.

The users who are really upset are the ones who, wisely or not, used the serve to send important, non-infringing personal and work-related files to themselves, friends and colleagues. Immediately after the shutdown of Megaupload, we saw a surge of angry tweets from people who were using the service for personal purposes and can no longer access their files. Now, there's talk of those users suing the FBI in response.

Cannabinoids
We show that 1 month after chronic HU210 treatment, rats display increased newborn neurons in the hippocampal dentate gyrus and significantly reduced measures of anxiety- and depression-like behavior. Thus, cannabinoids appear to be the only illicit drug whose capacity to produce increased hippocampal newborn neurons is positively correlated with its anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects.

With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun and decides to off the stupidest, cruelest and most repellent members of society with an unusual accomplice: 16-year-old Roxy, who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement.
